Pall and Taggart Talk the Future in 2016 Chainsmokers Interview

The Chainsmokers chart-topper from 2016, “Closer” has just become a mega-hit. The single achieved diamond certifications a few months ago. For those not in the biz, this means the single sold over ten million copies. A very big achievement for artists who have only been around for four years. “Closer” was indeed a game changer. Done in collaboration with then-newcomer Halsey. the song not only launched her careers but solidified the Chainsmokers as artists. The duo talked about it in length during an interview conducted after “Closer” released.

“People connect to our music on a very deep level,” Pall stated, “And we want that to happen more, a lot more.” The interview conducted by Mathias Rosenzweig of Interview Magazine really cut to the quick of who the Chainsmokers were trying to be. This is interesting because “Closer” allowed them to become who they wanted to be. The song, written by Taggart, was performed by Taggart and Halsey. It broke ground as the Chainsmokers at the time were considered EDM, and EDM does not write or sing its own music. Pall and Taggart did not want to be EDM, they wanted to be legitimate artists. When asked why they decided to personalize their music Pall answered, “why not?” According to him, no one else was doing it.

“Not one of these DJs write their own lyrics,” Pall said, “We work with the songwriters and write the songs as well so they are about us.” This personal connection is all the duo is known for now. Each new release a perfect reflection of how they feel and where they are at. “Closer” was a groundbreaker in many ways. It is obvious from the interview that both Pall and Taggart felt it as well. According to Taggart, they did not want to become parodies of themselves, and the did not want to be one of a dozen remakes of the same song. They certainly are not.

One other thing that Pall commented in on is how they wanted their music to be a body of work. Each song connected with the other, and none of them serving as a mindless dance song. “Closer” was not just a dance song and the songs that have come after held the same standard.
